Streisand Dog Clone Jokes, Winner Thanks Cat, Oscars Animal Moments

News

Sadly, there were no “consolation” puppies handed out at the Oscars on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean animals weren’t top of mind on Hollywood’s biggest night. They weren’t just played for laughs, either. One Oscar winner even thanked a special feline friend.

In his acceptance speech for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, makeup artist Kuzuhiro Tsuji, who transformed Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour, not only thanked the Best Actor winner but also his cats. The Twitterverse, of course, swooned.

Cats weren’t the only pets getting their due diligence from the Academy. The evening’s master of ceremonies, hilarious host Jimmy Kimmel, just couldn’t resist getting a dig in about Academy Award-winning singer and actress (she’s also a past director nominee) Barbra Streisand for the recent news that she cloned her deceased dog.

Following a montage featuring military movies, Kimmel joked, “I also want to send best wishes to Barbra Streisand. She’s fine, Barbra’s fine, but she just went through something very serious. I don’t know if you heard, but she had her dog cloned. She had a dog that passed away cloned, and now she has two dogs that are identical to the original dog, which is a very difficult and expensive process. It’s difficult, because, you know, first they have to find a dog that looks just like your dog, and then they have to tell you they cloned your dog.”

He sealed the zinger, saying “Anyway, best wishes to Barbra and her dogs, Yentl and Lentil. In L.A., even our pets are remakes. It’s really something else.”

Kimmel also took a furry little swipe at Call Me By Your Name‘s Best Oscar nominee, Timothée Chalamet, when he kidded that the young star was “missing Paw Patrol to be here tonight.”

Finally, audiences who don’t give a hoot about Oscar fashion were treated to some real exotic looks on Nat Geo WILD from the Red Carpet on Sunday night. As you can see in the video above, Meryl Sheep, Cobra Winfrey, Bunnifer Lawrence, Sloth Rogan, KangaRooney Mara and ViOWLa Davis were all there glamming it up for the animal cams. Dog döppelganger Jimmy Kibble was the host of the adorable Pawscars Awards event, with a little help from human co-hosts Ross Matthews and Sarina Morales.
